Been staying at home for several days....nothing to blog about.
But before this...my list of possible search terms again...lol
" SYF 08, SYF '08, SYF 2008, Singapore Youth Festival, national stadium, display bands, display band, defending champion, best display band, best drum major, Joshua, GWH, Gold, Gold with honours, tanjong katong secondary school band, tk sec band, tkss, tkband, tk band, tanjong katong band, tanjong katong military band, spinning, marching, drum major, twirling, drills, chinese warriors, music, bowen band, bowen secondary school band, bowen military band, bmb, butts, shaking, dancing, drum majorette, sexy, deyi secondary school band, deyi military band, deyi band, dmb, colour guards, colourguards, flag bearers, flags, 12 April 2008, April 08, July '08, gimmicks, youtube "Just for fun...Looking back, no wonder Deyi won. Their performance was beautiful to me. Plenty of !!!WOW!!! factors. So many unexpected gimmicks coming from them. I loved the surprise powder element during the phantom formation. Den suddenly "eh, how come got baby powder smell?". Their colourguards or flag party or watever CANNOT be beaten lah. They can be soo graceful at times and slick at other times. Sometimes I feel that it is the colourguards that gave the "wow" factor. I spent more time looking at the Dance Club girls than the band members. They were more mesmerising to me. And their Drum Major is forever damn zai lah...hahaha
Lol...oh but the pain in my heart is bloody hell still there...
Now we - the 1998-2006 batch - all know wat it's like to lose. My friend heard me say "God...the feeling sucks". And she told me, "well, this is wat other bands have been feeling for the past 10 years".
In a way, this is good for TK. Winning too much just makes you complacent. Losing the title will make TK Band buck up after realising...yes, losing is still a possibility even for a 5 time defending champion. To be honest, even we, ex-bandmembers started asking among ourselves...
"One win too many?"
"How long before we finally lose the title?"
"We will eventually lose one day right?"
"Which band will finally take the throphy from us?"
"Whoever it is...Boy...that band will be the happiest band alive to kick our ass from da throne"
We all wondered how we will react if we lose one day. We used to laugh and say things like "aiyah...lose nvm lah...we won too many times already...let's just give other bands a chance". We act cool about losing one day. Like it won't bother us. We all said we'll just laugh it out loud.
The actual day, 12 April 2008, it started with super heavy rain. From what I noe, for a long time, it hasn't rained during a band comp day. Immediately, i felt like something is wrong abt that day. Wahidah wondered whether she should come cuz she felt like this year would be the year for TK's downfall. She didn't wanna be there to witness the downfall if it happened cuz...jus cuz...
The Best Display Band of the year goes to..."Deyi Seco.............."
And true enough, we lost. We said it won't bother us. But it did. We used to say that we wanna let other bands get a taste of victory. But now, we felt like they've taken something so close to us and we need it back asap. Talking about losing is one thing, but actually losing is another.
Thanks to Fir from rawr-ified.blogspot.com for the TK drum major pic... The vintage band in black. The Black Parade. Standing there rigid in sedia position. So obvious they were all crying but not of joy. My heart goes out to them cuz it's not fair they have to feel the pain. They came forward n played for their supporters fighting back tears. The school cheering them on, saying "TK Band! You are still the BEST!" It was bittersweet. Teachers, ex-teachers, school staffs, fellow students, ex-students, friends, family, principal, ex-principal, hugging the members and saying soothing words to try ease the pain. TK Spirit never dies...
Deyi just beside us playing to their supporters. Huggin, cheerin, smiles on their faces. Two different atmosphere side-by-side.
Strange that we felt the hurt even though we aren't the current band members. Will we ever outgrow this attachment to the band? Apart of me thinks..."I don't think so.." Probably 10 years down the road we'll still be coming back for the competitions.
One thing i hope is that, the TK Band alumni would provide all TK Band EX-members the band alumni T-shirt from 2010 onwards. Cuz are we not the band alumni as well? Are we two separate entities? We do come back to support. Is that not enough? It's not like we don't wanna come down to help, but they, the band ALUMNI, makes us feel inferior. I hope they will make it more comfortable for us to come down and help. I always feel like its THEM and US. The band management really need to think abt that. No more 'them' and 'us' please...
Again, congrats to Deyi! Again, fantastic colourguards! Again, awesome drum major!
Yes, now you know what it's like to win the Best Display Band award. Crying tears of joy. The feeling damn shiok.
I know.
We know.
That's how we felt 5 times in a row.
